Aristotle on Friendship
Aristotle wrote in the Nicomachean Ethics that there were three types of friends. The first type is friends of utility. These are the people who we befriend because they provide some utility to us, e.g. they send people to your business. The second type is friends of pleasure. These are the people who we befriend because they are pleasant to be around. This level is better than the first, but not as good as the last type. The last, and ideal, type of friends are friends of virtue. They are the people who strive to make us better people, both through example and through prodding. |
